What to Do When Your Heater Goes Kaput in the Middle of Winter

It’s one o’clock in the morning, and you’re sleeping soundly on a particularly cold winter’s night, snuggled up under the blankets. Normally, you wouldn’t notice your heat turning on. But tonight is different. Tonight, as your furnace begins to run, you hear an awful, ear-piercing squealing sound resonating from your vents. While you try to ignore it at first, the noise just keeps getting louder. Groggily, you make your way downstairs to the utility room where you verify that, indeed, that horrible sound is coming from your heating unit. What do you do?

  • Turn off your heater. If your HVAC unit is making unusual sounds, then there is most likely a mechanical issue that will require a technician. If you allow the heater to continue running, there is a chance that you could cause more damage to the malfunctioning part, or even to surrounding parts, which could result in a more expensive repair. If you’re not sure how to turn off your unit, then set the thermostat for a temperature where it will be unlikely to turn on again.
  • Stay warm in the meantime. Since it might take a few hours for a technician to arrive at your home, you’ll need to stay warm in the interim. Put on warm sweaters, hats and gloves to help you stay comfortable. Cozy up with a cup of hot cocoa or coffee. If you own a space heater or two, you can use those to keep individual rooms warm as well.
